Lack of knowledge of English bar to employment

by RAMANI KANGARAARACHCHI

"Although there are many job opportunities available, both locally in the private sector as well as abroad, majority of our educated and qualified youth cannot make use of them due to lack of knowledge of English which is vital for employment".

Minister of Power and Energy Karu Jayasuriya said so at the certificate presentation ceremony of the Special English Education project conducted by Gampaha Branch of the Kelaniya University Alumni Association held at Bandaranaike National School, Gampaha yesterday (21).

Appreciating the initiative of the Kelaniya University Alumni Association for launching this project, having identified the current need, the minister said that the unemployment rate among educated youth was growing rapidly and it would lead to many social, economic and political problems and also create unrest among youth, and he hoped this program would ease the situation to a great extent in the future.

This special project was launched at the beginning of the year to upgrade the use of practical English among youth in the Gampaha district in collaboration with the Professionals' Association of Kelaniya.

The project focused on youth between the age group of 15 and 25 with emphasis on school leavers, unemployed university graduates and students of GCE (O/L and A/L) etc. The six- month practical course was mainly aimed at youth of low income group. The entire course was conducted free of charge. Over 500 youth benefited from this year's project funded by Surya Foundation under the patronage of its Chairperson, Dr. Mrs. Vasantha Jayasuriya.

The chief guest, Minister Karu Jayasuriya awarded certificates and also inaugurated another practical English course for 2003.
