Thirteen badminton coaches complete Olympic Solidarity Course The Sri Lanka Badminton Association(SLBA) which is celebrating their Golden Jubilee this year conducted an Olympic Solidarity Course Advanced Level 11 for thirteen coaches from December 15-20 at the SLBA Headquarters at Maitland Place and the participants received their certificates at the Ceylon Continental Hotel last Friday(20th) from National Olympic Committee(NOC) Secretary General Commander H.U.Silva and Chief Guest Manilal Fernando, Vice President, Asian Football Federation and Football Federation of Sri Lanka. The course was conducted by the International Badminton Federation(IBF) expert from Malaysia Venugopal Mahalingam , the resource personal was Major General DR C. Thurairajah and course co-ordinator E. Hettiarachchi. The participants who completed the course and received their certificates were S. Nagoor Kaney, K. Nallathamby, T. Amarasinghe, Kamal Ganlath, K.Godahewa, P. Silva, E. Karunaratne, N. Jayasekera, P. Welagedera, T.Premila Mendis, H. de Silva, M. Fernando and M. C. Fernando. Cmdr. H.U. Silva said that Olympic Solidarity Courses are expensive and the coaches who were trained should take full advantage of their training in order to impart their knowledge to others. There were 25 who followed the first course and now 13 have qualified for the second course and completed it. "The main drawback for a coach and player is the time constraint and the coaches should be dedicated to their job." said Commander Silva. Chief Guest Manilal Fernando said that Malaysia has produced many stars and that coach Mahalingam has rendered yeoman service to the SLBA by coaching the youngsters and helping the coaches in Sri Lanka. "My heart is not only in football but in developing other games as well and especially in Kalutara my home town" said Fernando. Coach Mahalingam said that the coaches who were trained under him could draw up a training programme and his aim was to create a thinking coach. Also present at the Ceremony was Dr A. R. L. Wijesekera and former President of SLBA Eraj Wijesinghe. President of SLBA, M. R. Jumar delivered the vote of thanks and thanked Commercial Bank as well for sponsoring Badminton in Sri Lanka. (P.J) |
