Sri Lanka to play in Asian Rugby Quadrangular Sri Lanka will be pitted against Japan, Hong Kong and Arabian Gulf in a Quadrangular in the Asian Circuit next year (2003) with the dates and venues to be decided upon by the respective rugby unions. The President of the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union (SLRFU), Commodore Harsha Mayadunne, said that the Council of the Asian Rugby Football Union (ARFU) decided to stage this tournament which is to be funded by the International Rugby Board (IRB). He said: "Sri Lanka will host at least two games in the country and we are in the process of writing to the respective unions on this matter." Sri Lanka last figured in a triangular earlier this year beating China 9-7 at Longden Place, but lost to Kazakhastan 14-20 at Taraz. Then at the recent Asian Games in Busan, South Korea, Japan, thrashed Sri Lanka 129-6. Sri Lanka who had a pathetic international season this year, have once again being invited to play at the Dubai 7s next year, although losing every single game to Samoa 5-57, New Zealand 0-66 and France 12-19, and even the consolation games to Canada 7-22 and Namibia 12-35. Sri Lanka will be sponsored by Aggreko. Sri Lanka are also preparing to play at the Hong Kong International 7s in March next year (2003). This year the Lankans lost all games in Hong Kong to New Zealand 0-51, Scotland 13-19, Portugal 0-33 and in the 'Bowl' category to Morocco 5-14. The SLRFU Council decided to inform the selection committee to pick 35 to 40 young players as soon as possible to start training next month (January 2003) to meet the international calendar for next season. The local calendar is to be drawn up soon by the SLRFU Tournament Committee headed by its Deputy President Mohan Balasuriya, while the annual general meeting is scheduled for next month (January).
