Anura Rohana has good chance to turn 'Pro' by LAL GUNESEKERA Sri Lanka's top amateur golfer and silver medallist at the Asian Games in Busan, South Korea, Anura Rohana's dreams of turning professional may become a reality soon, if he does qualify in two tournaments to be worked off in Malaysia next month (January 2003). Speaking to the Sunday Observer, Anura Rohana, said that these two tournaments involving eight rounds is a tough assignment, but he prays that he will qualify to play in the Asian PGA Tour. He will revert back to being an amateur if he does not qualify. He is scheduled to leave for Kuala Lumpur on January 7 and said that this trip involves a lot of money, but Rusi Captain and Sanjeewa Wickremanayake of IBM are sponsoring him. Rohana, since his return from South Korea, has been hard at practice. Anura Rohana added yet another feather to his cap by winning the Bangladesh Open Amateur Championship in Dhaka for the second time this year. He emerged champion with an aggregate of 281 (71, 72, 69, 69) and won by 11 strokes ahead of Bangladesh's Mohamed Rahuman 292 (73, 69, 76, 74). Lalith Kumara was in sixth position with rounds of 74, 70, 78 and 75, while Amarapathma ended in eighth place with rounds of 74, 76, 75 and 75. This tournament was conducted for the second time this year, as it will not be held for the next two years as the course in Dhaka is being developed. Rohana won the title for the first time in 1999. Nearly 80 amateurs from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Indonesia and Sri Lanka played in Dhaka last week. |
