Fine soccer expected in Kandy York vs Golden Stars final today by S.M. JIFFREY ABDEEN, Kandy Sports Corr. Fine soccer is in store when the strong Kandy York Sports Club take on the determined Golden Stars Sports Club in the final of the Kandy Football League's 'A' Division Inter-Club Soccer Tournament to be played at the Bogambara Stadium, Kandy, today - Sunday December 22, with the kick off at 4.00 p.m. Mayor of Kandy Kesara Senanayake will be the chief guest while Deputy Inspector General of Police (Central Province East) Nimal Mediwake will be the guest of honour. This tournament has been a major success for the Kandy Football League which according to the Secretary N.T. Sinnen that they have been able to complete the 'A' Division inter-league tournament within the same year. This tournament which began in July 2002, has been completed within the same year and all matches were played at the picturesque Bogambara Sodium. The Kandy FL also met the ground fees and the payments made to the referees and the touch judges. This is commendable indeed as earlier matches were played in out of town places like Getambe and Peradeniya. The tournament committee headed by work horse Tikiri Ambagaspitiya (Chairman) and assisted by S. Mediwake, S.A. Weerasinghe, M.S.M. Mashood, M. Jamaldeen and others did a commendable job despite the forebodings of the times. In the run-up to the final, both York Sports Club and Golden Stars Sports Club had minor setbacks losing to less fancied teams but their play gained momentum as the tournament progressed to demolish their opponents to enter the semi-finals. In the semi-finals, York SC beat Hylines SC 4 - 2, to avenge their earlier defeat in Premier League tournament. Golden Stars SC who lost to Sissu SC 2-1 had the distinction of beating York SC 2-1 in a league match which provided them, the platform to play in the semi-finals. Therefore this final should be a hotly contested affair in which no quarter will be asked nor given. Kandy Police will handle the security arrangements. The whistle will be handled by Japanese Ono Shuiro. Before the commencement of the match, the chief guest and other distinguished personalities will be introduced to both teams. |
