Mahinda Samarasinghe, Minister of Employment and Labour

"I truly believe that the new Labour Laws will increase the relationship between employers and employees while increasing our competitiveness, thereby securing a share from the labour market overseas and also expanding it.

"It also sends positive signals to the private sector by ensuring a conducive environment for the private sector to do business.

"We are also formulating a safety net with International Labour Organisation assistance to help people who lose their jobs. For the first time in Sri Lanka, the Government will introduce an unemployment insurance scheme under which persons who have lost their jobs will get a monthly dole for a maximum period of one year, by which time they can gain skills and find alternative employment under the Jobsnet program, which is launched today (12).

"India, Pakistan and Bangladesh have already implemented labour reforms; our country has been late in implementing them. But, it is better late than never."

Mahinda Rajapakse, Opposition Leader and former Minister of Labour

"The Bills give powers to employers to sack any employee. It is a very serious issue.

"The Bill will not be able to attract investment".
