UN Secy-General's visit : LTTE keen to meet Annan by S. Selvakumar The LTTE has expressed a desire to meet United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan when he visits Sri Lanka next month, diplomatic sources said. However, Foreign Minister Tyronne Fernando told the Sunday Observer that "a lot of people have shown an interest in meeting Mr. Annan but, everything depends on his itinerary which will be a tight schedule". The UN chief's visit, probably on February 26 and 27, will be the culmination of a new focus on Sri Lanka by the UN top rung with UNICEF head Carol Bellamy and Olara Otunnu, UN Under-Secretary General for children in armed conflicts coming here before Mr. Annan. Carol Bellamy, the UNICEF Chief is due here by the end of this month and Mr. Otunnu is expected in early February. Both Otunnu and Bellamy are expected to concentrate more on the issues such as child soldiers and rehabilitation of children affected by the conflict. The Foreign Minister further said that when he met Mr. Annan in New York has expressed his willingness to visit Sri Lanka and at the same has said that he wished to travel to Jaffna during his visit. "That of course mainly because the United Nations is involved in the reconstruction of the war ravaged peninsula. But if he agrees to meet LTTE representatives then it could be arranged," Mr. Fernando added. |
