Solar power to end power crises?

A new UNI-Solar system has been launched in Sri Lanka to solve the energy crisis plaguing the country and to minimise domestic electricity tariffs affecting many Solardynamics Private Ltd's Managing Director, Lakshman Attygalle said at the launch of the product last Wednesday.

Mr. Attygalle said that a campaign would be launched shortly to popularise the Uni-Solar system in rural areas. This solar-type system has 40 percent more power than the usual solar type system on the market. The new system will be made available to villages through several World Bank projects and through the Samurdi and Seva Lanka projects with value addition. A free colour television set with a cabinet containing a battery and free installation would be provided to buyers. The new system will even help to avert a power crisis when supplied to the national grid.

He said that the Solardynamics company would provide a Uni -Solar system free of charge to a place of religious worship in the future. The product is more effective because it draws three rays from the sun instead of two.

Terresa Manlowe of US Embassy's Trade Consulate, said that Sri Lanka's ample sunshine could be harnessed with the latest solar power technology produced in the US. Solardynamics Private Limited imports the main ingredient from USA and through a value added process produces the end product for the consumer market.

Others who participated at the launch were USAID's Energy Advisor, Upali Daranagama, Solar-Dynamics Chairman, Suchit Mouott. JJ
