Probe into National Hospital stabbing incident

by JAYAMPATHY JAYASINGHE

A senior administrative officer has been appointed to probe the recent stabbing incident where two persons admitted to the National Hospital Colombo (NHC) for treatment succumbed to their injuries after being stabbed by three persons last week.

The one-man probe will look into every aspect including security, at the National Hospital, Colombo, as to whether there were lapses and measures taken to redress such situations, Director General of the National Hospital Colombo (NHC) Dr. Hector Weerasinghe told the Sunday Observer.

He said that around 60,000 persons visit the National Hospital Colombo on a daily basis and that over 3500 patients are warded at the NHC for treatment. Restricting visitors to the NHC had caused inconvenience to the general public and the rule had been relaxed after the cessation of hostilities with the LTTE. However, unauthorised visitors are still debarred from entering the Accident Ward where patients injured in brawls are brought for treatment.

Dr. Weerasinghe said that he plans to discuss with the police hierarchy the setting up of an additional Police Post at Ward Place to beef up security at the NHC. It was only six months ago that the strength at the NHC Police Post was increased.

He said that he was also awaiting a report from the Police before any action was taken against the security personnel.

Meanwhile, the Senior Supdt. of Colombo Central Lucky Dissanayake has detailed a team of Police officers to track down the two killers wanted in connection with the death of a mobster, Wasantha, and his accomplice who were stabbed to death in Ward 54 at the National Hospital, Colombo, last week.

Wasantha's accomplice who was admitted to Ward 57 was stabbed to death by a knife-wielding suspect who ran out of the hospital and boarded a bus going towards Borella. People who had witnessed the suspect boarding a bus had informed a police party from the Fort police station travelling in a jeep towards Borella. The police party intercepted the bus and arrested the gangster wielding a blood - stained knife.

The double killing was due to a personal vendetta between the deceased mobster and the suspects from Welikada area to dominate the illicit liquor trade. The deceased mobster and his henchmen had even encroached into an illicit liquor manufacturing place at Athurugiriya run by suspects who are evading arrest. The killers, believed to be from the Welikade area are evading arrest, Police said.

According to Police the killers had first visited the two injured persons at the NHC 'Accident Ward on the day of the incident before they launched an attack in the evening.

DIG, Colombo, Bodi Liyanage and SSP Colombo Central are directing the investigations.
