GTZ supports NAITA career guidance program

The peace process initiated by the government has already begun to show beneficial results in many aspects of the day to day life of the people. A new sense of confidence and freedom from fear is apparent not only in the North and East but in other parts of the country as well. In this atmosphere of co-operation and mutual goodwill, urgent steps must be taken to facilitate economic development, particularly in the war affected areas which have long been deprived of even the basic amenities of modern life.

Education and training is an essential prerequisite to industrial development, and it is in this area that the young people of the North and East have long been neglected, as an inevitable consequence of the long drawn out war. Not only have opportunities for vocational training been extremely limited, the youth have had little or no access to information regarding even the few opportunities that exist.

In order to correct this situation, the German government has generously provided equipment, as well as staff training, for a mobile career guidance service in the North and East, through the German Agency for Technical Co-operation (GTZ). The National Apprentice & Industrial Training Authority has been provided with three fully equipped mobile career guidance units in order to expand their existing career guidance service to the North & East as well.

Six Tamil-speaking officers have been specially trained in career guidance & counselling by local and foreign experts and provided with all modern facilities required for the effective performance of their duties. Based in Jaffna, Vavuniya and Trincomalee, these officers will travel throughout the Northern & Eastern provinces, providing career guidance and counselling services in schools, Divisional secretariats and other central locations where large groups of young people can be addressed.

Our sincere thanks are due to the government of Germany and GTZ for this generous gesture, and it is our fervent hope that the assistance provided by them will enable us to guide the youth of the North & East to avail themselves of the opportunities already available for vocational training, WIRUMA
