Cluster buses off the roads

By Deepal Warnakulasuriya

A discussion to take over the six cluster bus companies and to finalise on signing the agreement, will take place between the IBIS experts and Transport Ministry officials tomorrow (January 13).

Officials from the PERC and the Finance Ministry as well as the Minister of Tourism Gamini Lokuge will also join in the discussion with the IBIS team led by IBIS local representative Ian Bulley and Trans Bus International Director Robbin Merrymann.

"Signing the agreement will take place in one week's time after having several discussions with transport personnel", Latec Managing Director Ravi Wettasinghe who is the local body of the project, said. Wettasinghe said that they will hold discussions with all trade unions connected with the CTB and will enter into a collective agreement. He further said that the new management welcomes suggestions from employees and they will be given a patient hearing scrutiny.

Wettasinghe also added that they had also arranged to import few double decker buses and at the same time, will repair several buses which are roadworthy.

Once the agreement and the transaction completed, the management of six cluster companies of Kandy, Sabaragamuwa, Rajarata, Kalutara, Gampaha and Colombo Metropolitan will be taken over by the IBIS.
