Hemas focuses on early childhood development The Hemas Group has initiated the community service project Piyawara in association with the Ministry of Social Welfare and pledged five million rupees towards it over the next two years. This project follows the need for greater understanding and awareness that early childhood development plays in a child's psychological well-being. 'Piyawara' is a public-private sector initiative, which seeks to promote higher standards of early childhood development, by setting up model centres and creating awareness throughout Sri Lanka. Hemas in association with the Ministry will upgrade and develop eight government-run pre-schools in Jaffna, Gampaha, Kurunegala, Matale, Badulla, Polonnaruwa, Ratnapura and Matara. These schools will be upgraded to 'Model Resource Centres'. Hemas CEO Husein Esufally said the five million rupees would be utilised towards providing learning equipment, upgrading toilet and drinking water facilities, providing safe and pleasant play areas, conducting regular health checks for the children and pre-natal health camps for parents in these centres. Another area that will receive attention will be the training of pre-school teachers. This has already commenced with 20 teachers from chosen pre-schools being sponsored at an 11 day residential workshop and program conducted by the Ministry last month. The company staff, through sector sports clubs have voluntarily 'adopted' a pre-school. Eight 'foster parent clubs' now have eight 'foster pre-schools' to look after and develop. |
