A 'Fun Centre' for Kotte by Don Asoka Wijewardena
Kotte has now become the capital of Sri Lanka and the country's supreme legislature stands majestically by the side of Diyawanna Oya which bears witness to this historically significant city. In a bid to provide fun and recreation to the residents of Kotte, "Splash Fun Centre" was opened on January 19 by Minister Ravi Karunanayake, Mayor, Kotte Municipal Council Ranjith Cooray and others. The architect behind this project, Mohan Niyangoda, said that "Splash Fun Centre" was the brainchild of Minister Karunanayake and Lanka Youth Business Promotion Society. It was mooted by a number of businessmen in the area, and managed by MBC Network (Pvt) Ltd. "As the planners were experiencing a deep sense of empathy towards Kotte residents it was decided that a new recreation centre should be constructed with more facilities, especially for children," said Niyangoda. Mohan Niyangoda, AGM Treasury and Investment Banking in Maharaja Organisation was entrusted with the task of selecting a location and drawing a plan for the centre and he explained that after visiting several locations, he was attracted by the Diyawanna Oya premises as the entire environment was blessed with plenty of water and lush green vegetation festooned with creepers.
The centre offers a wide range of recreational facilities for people of all walks of life.Indoor games such as billiards, table tennis, athletics for young men and women, and a good restaurant with variety of local and western food. The children's favourite video games have not been ignored. A beer parlour invites the visitors silently.The centre is open from 5 p.m to midnight everyday and it teems with visitors at weekends. Ajith Gamlath, Promotions Manager (Sirasa TV), told us that Sirasa Network had decided to introduce water sports (paddling canoe) and some other sports in the near future as the centre is located on the banks of the Diyawanna Oya. An entrance fee of Rs 30 is charged from visitors by way of a coupon and this sum is deducted from the purchases made at restaurants and trade stalls in the centre. In a short span of time Kotte area has witnessed remarkable progress in
all spheres of activities such as new business centres, well-equipped
supermarkets, widening and construction of new roads and recreation
centres. Although Kotte area is thickly populated, steps have been taken
to cater to the needs of all residents under the supervision of the Kotte
Municipal Council.
Approximately Rs 10 million was spent on the project.
