by Bird Good Morning Everybody. Welcome to yet another Sunday Morning with me Bird. One thing I love most about life is that it's so unexpected. It has so many twists and turns. One moment you're sad-the next happy-dissapointed-angry-overjoyed-etc.etc.etc. I think the most unexpected of the lot is surprises. It just catches you anywhere, unaware. Anyway, that's enough rambling by me. Lets get straight to the point, yup and as usual it has something to do with a scrape I got into. Listen very carefully I will say this only once. It was the weekend. Just like any other? Definitely not. For one thing it was a long weekend. For another, I was home alone and had the whole house to myself. Yup being a long weekend the Principal, Vice Principal and Boo Boo were all packed off to Nuwera Eliya for their annual vacation to the cool climes. Something I usually attend to myself. This year however being the working girl I am things were different. With a last minute overload of work on my lap I had to stay back. So at good old Colombo Town I was with a weekend free of strict rules and regulations. A weekend just for me, to do whatever I like(or so I thought). Just take the first morning. One thing I've always wanted to do but havn't been able to with the Principal around is sleep till late. I just hate being woken up from my beauty sleep at 6.00 a.m. Well what happened was I just woke. Yup all on my own at six in the morning and try as I might to tell my eyelids to close and let me rest, they just sturbbornly wouldn't. Seeing no use in just lying in bed, I pulled myself out and did the 'Ceramonies'. (Just in case you are wondering, 'Ceremonies' is a name my sissy and I gave to performing ablution and brushing our teeth when we were tiny shrimps.) Swallowing down an egg and packing my bag I went off to work. Coming back and... (hey its private), the real surprise of the day happened at 7.00 p.m. I was downstairs just lounging about when the phone rang. "Hello" I answered. "Is that Bird?" said a sing-song voice. "Yes"(who can this be?). "Bird, well Congratulations. I'm from Sun FM and you've been nominated by your friends and have won a prize". "Yes" (Yippee). "However you have to sing us a song on air first". "What?" (oh no) "Yes, you have to. You actually had the choice of singing a song, telling a story or joke, but your friend said you have to sing". "Just tell me who this so-called friend is?" (wait till I get her). "No that's classified information (???) you have won the prize but you have to sing a song to get it". "Can't I tell a joke (please don't make me sing)". "Okay go ahead" (whew). "Well er one day... (the joke's too long to write down)...", I finished. "That was a pretty long joke". "Ya well I had to think of something (what about the prize ha?). "Well come on now, you have to sing a song to get the prize". "But I already told a joke. That's no fair". "Sorry but your friend insisted you must sing. Come on, you can do it". "Er.. (well what have I got to lose. Afterall I'm gonna get a prize. Think of the prize).. well okay". "Good. Well here goes your gonna be on air". The background music comes to a stop-some guy goes "pass me the next cd", then all noise in the back comes to a stop and I'm faced with this silent stillness. Well its now or never, I think and begin for some reason or other "Can't you see I love you. Please don't break my heart in two. Cause ... (Damn what's next)...er.. hello (this is so embarresiing) I can't remember any more. Hello.. (don't tell me I'm still on air. Someone just speak. Come on. Come on)..". "Hello (at last) that was good. Do you want to hear the recording?". "No Way (ignorance is bliss). Well what about the prize?". "We will get back to you about that tomorrow. The recording today will also be telecast tomorrow. We will inform you about it later. Nice speaking to you by". "By" I said and kept the phone still remaining in a state of shock. I mean had all that really happened? Was that Sun FM? Did I really sing on air for everyone to hear me me. Am I really getting a prize? I was in a dizzy swirl of embarrassment, confusion and joy. Wanting to share my feelings and wandering who this friend was I dialled my number one suspect-Nilu. As it turned out to be she insisted it wasn't herself though she did say she was mighty thankful to whoever who made me sing in public. Suspect number two Cookie was out when I phoned her. Thinking it couldn't possibly be anyone else, I gave a distant call to N'Eliya to break the news to my family. Being overjoyed and telling they would keep an ear out on the radio for me they finally kept. Getting up on Sunday morning feeling very happy with the previous day's proceedings I rushed and answered the phone bell as soon as it rang. "Hello"(let it be Sun FM). "Hello is that Bird?". "Sun FM" I said in sheer happiness. "Er no, this is Andre. Do you remember me?". "Ya of course" (who on earth is this?). "No I don't think you remember. I was at Varuni's party" (oh that guy). "Oh ya I remember. So how are you?". "Okay. Why did you think I was Sun FM?". "Oh that well er.. (I'm comming on air and getting a prize why shouldn't I tell) Sun FM called me yesterday. I apparently have won a prize and am supposed to come on air today. They said they'll call me back with all the details. So I thought it would be them". "Er.. Bird. Did you really fall for that?". "What?". "It was a prank". "Whaaat???" (this can't be happening). "Ya it was. Me and my friends made the whole thing up. I got my friend to call you and ...anyway I hope your not mad with me?" "The Sun FM thing is not true? It was all a joke?" (I can't believe it. It seemed so real). "Yes". "Oh no". For some reason, probably to the shock, my brain was just not responding to this piece of news. "Oh yes". "Wait, let me get this straight. That wasn't Sun FM that called. Your called, faking the whole thing up, making me make a fool of myself" (help). "Oh, your singing was okay. Come on you at least took part". At least? Ya I took part alright. Except not for Sun FM but to these jobless blokes. Well anyway there I was. I had sung and told a joke all for nothing. It wasn't comming on air, but was apparently a private listening to these guys. What's more there was no faboulous prize for all this either. |
