All articles should be sent on or before February 14. by Nipuni Samarasekara "What are you?" the girl whispered. The woman did not say a word, but her green eyes flickered unnervingly, as she stared. The girl felt, deep down inside, that she knew this woman from somewhere. But she could not recall where or when, she could not remember anything! All she remembered was waking up at the foot of a cliff, stormy gray-green waves lapping at her feet, and a gash in her head. All she had was a simple silver chain round her neck where a beautiful silver amulet, with a dazzling blue stone in the middle, dangled. She made her way down the beach, wondering who she was and how she had got there. And what was this strange feeling inside of her, that she was here for a purpose, she was not just another girl with amnesia..... It was then that she had noticed the cat. A normal, pregnant cat, with inquisitive green eyes. That was all....... Strange feeling But she had this strange feeling that it was watching her every move. And now this strange woman, who looked so much like the cat; the cage; the animals... it was all too much for her. She felt desperate. Suddenly the woman spoke in a strange quiet voice, "Give me the necklace ... and all will be free," she gestured to all around her, then to the girl's amulet. The cold and ominous light of the gloomy morning struck the stone and made it dazzle, but the girl, looking down at it, thought that it had a light of its own. "If I give you this thing, can I go?" she asked the woman hesitantly. The woman's green eyes flickered with greed. "Yes, yesss" the woman hissed and gestured eagerly. The girl wondered at her reaction, but shrugged and held the chain ready to break it off her neck. Then from the cages adjoining hers, roars of great fury arose. It startled her so much that she jumped away from the woman, dropping her hands from the chain. As she did this the roaring stopped. Hundreds of glistening eyes emerged from the dark cages to watch them. The woman snarled and pushed her hands through the bars of the cage, trying to grab at the girl's necklace. She backed away further. The woman hissed in anger, "give me the key, so my child may rule!" "No!" the girl cried," Get away from me!" Stared The woman stared at her, suddenly quiet, but the hate that was inside her was so powerful you could touch it. She hissed unintelligibly and stormed away. The girl stared as the woman walked off. Who is she? What does she want with my necklace? And ... who are these animals? What do they want? The animals pawed at her cage, as if asking her to do something. She was so confused! She clutched her amulet and began crying. Just then a shriek rent the air. The darkness advancing on the dawn suddenly grew complete. And through it all appeared the woman with the green eyes. She was screaming for the amulet. She carried a child wrapped in dark cloth. She was not walking, simply floating in, her black robes flying in the sudden wind. The white fangs in the woman's mouth frightened the girl. She screamed and instinctively pressed the stone in the amulet. Light Suddenly a piercing blue-white light burst from the amulet, and lighting up the cages. The girl felt the memories flood back, she understood; she remembered! She remembered the cat on the cliff just before the sudden push... And now .... She the keeper of the Amulet of Life, the saviour of all the caged animals, who were in truth, her own people, must destroy the sorceress and her child. That thing of pure evil in her arms should not live. "NOOOOOOO!" screamed the sorceress. |
