Tyronne seeks Iraq's concurrence with UN Foreign Minister Tyronne Fernando urged Iraq to cooperate with the UN and leave no room for excuse, if we are to have a meaningful future for the world body. "The cooperation of Iraq is very vital if we are to have a meaningful future for the United Nations. Also Iraq should leave no room for excuse," Minister Fernando told BBC's Asia Today Program on Friday when the presenter Keshini Navaratnam asked about his opinion about the situation in Iraq, as a candidate for the UN Secretary General post. The United Nations is now facing the most crucial moments in its history, mainly with regard to the situation in Iraq, he said. "Since you mentioned about the UN Secretary General post I must mention here that it is a long way ahead and we are in no hurry. We have only said that we are available since Asia should not miss this opportunity," the minister said. The future of the UN is very vital to the entire world. As far as Sri Lanka is concerned, we have a significant amount of trade with Iraq, mainly tea. Income generating sectors such as tourism and investment will also be affected, he said. When asked whether an Iraqi war would bring a negative impact on the ongoing peace negotiations in Sri Lanka, Minister Fernando stressed that such a situation would not have any effect on such a stable process. |
