Pahan Poojas islandwide to mark ceasefire anniversary by Don Asoka Wijewardena To commemorate the first anniversary of the cease-fire agreement between the government and the LTTE, an islandwide Pahan pooja has been organised by the Samurdhi, Agriculture and Livestock Minister S. B. Dissanayake. A special religious ceremony will be held at Torrington Square at 6.30 p.m. with the participation of all religious dignitaries on February 22. Arrangements have been made to issue a free booklet, containing important facts and highlights of the peace process to all schools and principals have been instructed to detail a teacher to explain the contents of the booklet to students on February 21. Special meetings will also be held on February 14 and 15 at the District Secretariats to discuss plans regarding religious ceremonies to be held on district basis to bless the peace initiatives. Minister Dissanayake urged all patriotic citizens of Sri Lanka to light a Pahan (lamp) on February 22 at 6.30 p.m. to honour the successful completion of the ceasefire by both parties for one year. He said that the LTTE had also realised the importance of permanent peace to resolve relevant issues with confidence and understanding. |
