Permanent teaching posts for 3,000 diploma holders

by ANJANA GAMAGE

Three-thousand diploma holders who had successfully undergone teacher training at the colleges of education run by the Education Ministry will receive permanent teaching appointments next month.

According to an Education Ministry spokesman, those who sat for the final examination of the college in November 2002, are also eligible for these appointments. The number of teaching appointments allocated to university graduates have also been increased from 750 to 1,250 this year. The ministry has recruited 3,795 GCE (Advanced Level) qualified students to the colleges of education this year.

Meanwhile, the ministry has also taken steps to streamline the recruitment of volunteer teachers to the teaching service, with priority to those who have served in the North and East and the border villages. According to ministry sources, volunteer teachers with maximum qualifications, are also eligible for admission to a college of education for three years.

The government spends Rs.35,000 per volunteer teacher for a year and at present there are about 6,000 volunteer teachers throughout the country.
