Yogarajan prefers Belgium-type Parliament

by P. Krishnaswamy

The Ceylon Workers' Congress (CWC), the largest trade-union-cum-political party led by Minister Arumugan Thondaman, will soon moot an idea of a community parliament to represent the plantation community and other minorities, according to CWC spokesman R.Yogarajan MP.

Yogarajan was among the multi-party parliamentary delegation that recently toured four Europeon countries for familiarisation with the system of federal governments.

He told the "Sunday Observer" that a Belgium-style community parliament would serve the interests of the minorities, including the Muslims living outside their territorial areas.

He said that he was impressed by the Belgium structure of government since it looked after the rights and interests of individuals, the development of persons, their education, culture and social welfare. Funds were being allocated to the community parliaments, proportionate to the numbers of persons and students for social and cultural welfare and education, he said. Lately there was a trend towards development of employment opportunities, under the community parliament, he added. The question of putting forward a proposal to the Government on this was being discussed by his party, he informed.
