The 'spring' of IT education by LAKMAL WELABADA 'Mindspring' is a unique name for a place which operates in a unique way, providing unique opportunities for those who want to get an education in information technology. It is a Board of Investment-approved IT institution established under a collaboration with Ramartech, a South Indian computer institution. "We have both Indian and Sri Lankan instructors qualified in Master of Computer Science. We get updated curricula from Ramartech," A.J. Ahmed, Director and Chief Executive Officer of Mindspring said. Though officially two-months old, Mindspring has a long list of computer courses at three levels - Basics, Application and Administration computer operator level. Unlike the usual format of entrance that takes place everywhere else, Mindspring comes with a student counsel, an Indian expert who probes and leads the student to choose the course which suits him/her. "We have the latest infrastructure facilities with 24-hour ISDN connection, and conduct on-line and off-line classes," he said. At present, courses are offered to students above 16 years of age, but the institute hopes to begin classes for the primary level in the near future. At advanced level, Mindspring conducts classes for Bachelor of Information Technology affiliated to the University of Colombo, and a Diploma and Advanced Diploma affiliated to the Tertiary and Vocational Education Commission. "We are also planning to conduct classes for the National Computing Council examination of UK in the near future," added Ahmed. The institute has launched corporate training workshops for the private and commercial sector. Free training programs had also been conducted for print and electronic media personnel. Ahmed said that Mindspring has a scholarship scheme for Diploma in Information and Communication Technology, Advanced Diploma in Information and Communication Technology and Honours Diploma in E-Commerce. Two more branches of Mindspring will be opened in the Southern and Northern regions within six months. |
