National festival to mark Int'l Women's Day

The Ministry of Women's Affairs will celebrate the international Women's Day on Saturday March 8 with a national festival at the BMICH on the theme " Let us ensure equal opportunities for women in all fields and all levels of employment" scheduled to commence at 9.00 a.m. The festival will be attended by the Minister of Women's Affairs, Mrs. Amara Piyaseeli Ratnayake and Minister of Justice, Law Reforms, National Integration and Buddhasasana, W.J.M. Lokubandara. As part of the women's day, steps have also been taken to set up a hostel for the workers in Biyagama Free Trade Zone as a solution to their hostel facilities. Named Kantha Sevana, it will have accommodation facilities for 300 women workers.

Two-thousand-five hundred women from various parts of the country will be felicitated by the Ministry of Human Resources Development, Education and Cultural Affairs to mark the International Women's Day with a series of programmes that will recognise women's contribution to social and economic development. Two-thousand-five-hundred women who have dedicated themselves to promoting social, cultural and moral values will be felicitated at ceremonies to be held in various parts of the country.

Twenty-five women from each of the 100 provincial councils, where cultural centres have been established, will be selected for the felicitation ceremony.

Another group of 300 women from the Western Province will be felicitated for their commitment to social service at the Isurupaya auditorium in Battaramulla.
