Mobile patrol on push bicycles in Galle

by ANTON NONIS

A police mobile patrol using bicycles, was introduced as a pilot project in Galle recently, paid dividends, with less number of crimes reported.

The new scheme which was introduced by the Deputy Inspector General (Southern Province), D.W. Pratapasinghe, with five bicycles. Initially, the mobile patrols is being done in the town area, with police personnel on bicycles, provided with pistols and walkie-talkies, they will be in constant touch with the police command room in Galle.

ASP D. Tennakoon said they were able to arrest a number of suspects for offenses ranging from robbery to drug peddling and other unlawful acts. Once a complaint is made to the police, instructions are relayed to the patrolmen on bicycles, to act on it.

The project which is operative round-the-clock, will be extended to the suburbs of Galle, soon.

The bicycles for the project were donated by the public.
