Karateka Indika forms Matsubayashi Shorin-Ryu Org.

Karateka, Indika Asoka Agalawatte from Dediyawala, Kalutara, who underwent training in Japan, has formed the Matsubayashi Shorin-Ryu Organisation. A keen enthusiast in the martial arts, Indika underwent training and received the 3rd Dan black belt under the renowned Japanese, Shihan Kyoshi Sakamoto, a 8th Dan.

Indika, who first took to karate under the guidance of his elder brother, the well known martial artist, Lakshman Agalawatte and sensei Gamini Mudalige, says that he wished to develop this ancient Japanese art, founded by the late Shoshin Nagamine in 1937, locally.

"Later, sensei Nagamine's son, Hanshi continued in his father's footsteps in developing Matsubayashi in several countries with its headquarters in America of which sensei Nick Recaneli, who is in charge, helped me to form a branch in Sri Lanka", said Indika who in his early days shone in the field by coming second in the below 52 kilo kumite age group at the Western Province Karate Championships conducted by the National Karate Controlling Council in 1990, winner in kumite in the same event in 1991, and emerging winner at the Southern Province Karate Championships in 1992.

Subsequently, Indika says he was able to further flaunt his talents having trained under Japanese senesis Sakamoto, Shihan Fukuda Hirotoka (7th Dan), Zusuki Toshiyo (6th Dan) enabling him to set up a Japanese style here.

"I was also helped much by Shihan Clement De Soysa in going further while I also value the immense assistance received from my district M.P. and Minister of Lands, Rajitha Senaratne and the Minister of Media and Mass Communications, Imtiasz Bakeer Markar and the Provincial Council member for Kalutara, Jayantha Abeygunawardena. I also cannot forget the assistance from martial artist, H. Douglas Peiris, the Instructor of English of the Education Department, Patrick Warnakulasuriya, computer technology expert, Abeysiri Gunawardene, Yohan Weerasena, Sanjeewa Ariyaratne and ofcourse my wife Randima who has always motivated me", said Indika.
