SLT sweeps Taiki Akimoto 5s awards

Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT) bagged 13 awards and 2 certificates of excellence at the Taiki Akimoto 5S Award Ceremony held at the Galadari Hotel recently. The Taiki Akimoto 5S award ceremony was organised by Japan- Sri Lanka Technical and Cultural Association (JASTECA) for the 7th time. Many prominent government and private sector institutions took part in the competition, in which SLT was adjudged the overall winner. Being a large organisation spread throughout the island SLT took part in the competition as a separate unit.

The Kandy Unit won both the Taiki Akimoto overall winner award and the service sector winner award. The Chilaw and Kurunegala units picked up the joint overall first runner-up award and joint service sector runner-up award, respectively. Seven merit awards went to Matale, Kegalle, Bandarawela, Badulla, Avissawella, Amapara and Outside Plant Maintenance Centre (OPMC), Narahenpita, while Negombo and Gampola units secured two certificates of excellence.

The Taiki Akimoto awards ceremony recognises and honours outstanding and innovative achievements made by government institutions and private sector organisations in Japanese 5S concept. The aim of the awards is to promote quality awareness while encouraging organisations to excel in achieving high standards in productivity and quality. A large number of organisations in the manufacturing, plantation and service sectors took part in this year's Taiki Akimoto competition. Commenting on the success of SLT in winning these awards, SLT CEO Shuhei Anan said, "We at SLT are very happy and proud to win such a number of awards at the Taiki Akimoto award ceremony. It is very interesting to see achievements of SLT being recognised by prestigious organisations.

These awards and recognitions are very important for us because the 5S concept can be the foundation for Kaizen practices and Total Productive Maintenance (TPM), which eventually lead to the Total Quality Management (TQM) model". It is no doubt that "these achievements made through our employees will add value to our customers and shareholders equally. We need to find every possible way to add value to the bottom line in a very competitive environment such as that of today", Mr. Anan added.
