Tri Star Apparel Exports (Pvt) Ltd., the pioneer garment manufacturing combine to set up garment factories in the villages, has signed an agreement with Grasshopper Holding Plc of the United Kingdom, one of the largest suppliers of garments to UK and European Union for the supply of up to two million pieces of garments in babywear and children's wear per month.

An agreement to this effect was signed last week between the Chairman of Tri Star Deshabandu Kumar Dewapura and Chairman of Grasshopper Holdings Plc., Mr. John Matto.

According to the terms of the agreement, Tri Star will supply initially four lakhs of pieces per month commencing 30th March 2003 and going upto two million pieces per month.

The signing of the agreement is the result of talks Mr. Dewapura had with Mr. Matto in London and the subsequent visit to Sri Lanka by Mr. Matto to inspect the facilities and capabilities available in Tri Star factories.

Mr. Matto who visited several Tri Star factories in Sri Lanka was satisfied with the production capacity and facilities as well as the exemplary welfare measures put in place for the workers.

Grasshopper Holdings Chairman was particularly impressed by the facilities for Panel Printing, Embroidery, Handsmoking and Beads-work which are essential for production of babywear and children's wear.

The Tri Star Group has agreed to set apart six factories for production of the agreed quantities.

The company at present operates twenty factories throughout the country.

According to company sources, Grasshopper has also undertaken to provide training on the technologies to more Tri Star employees in London while Quality Controllers from Grasshopper Holdings will work alongside with Tri Star Quality Controllers and provide training to new hands to ensure quality of the products.

Tri Star and Grasshopper Holdings have also agreed to increase output and efficiency by introducing advanced computer technology.
