FM emphatic on UN role by Ananth Palakidnar Following a mandate by the cabinet on a recommendation of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to take the lead in acting up to the situation in Iraq, Foreign Minister Tyronne Fernando has made contacts with several countries to ensure that the United Nations Organisation is kept alive and not be allowed to break up and that a meaningful role is mapped out for it in the future. Minister Fernando told the Sunday Observer any danger to the United Nations would harm the third world countries to a greater extent. "The steady existence of the United Nations is imperative. Particularly, the third world countries cannot afford a split in the organisation. Every effort should be made to strengthen the UN body and I believe by doing this we could further explore ways and means of finding an early settlement to the Iraq issue", Minister said. He also said that he has already contacted the Singapore Foreign Ministry and several other Asian countries. |
