Civil Aviation Dept. in 'full flight'

The Director-General of the Civil Aviation Dept. has detailed out alternative routes avoiding the air space in the conflict area, via south of Saudi Arabia and Russia for future airline operations to and from European Countries to ensure smooth passenger movement.

According to the Ministry Secretary all tour operators had been advised to immediately communicate with their counterparts in the respective markets and to enlighten them on the alternate air routes and on the prevailing peaceful situation in this part of the region for tourist travel. However, the situation would be closely monitored by the Ministry of Tourism and the Sri Lanka Tourist Board and appropriate measures will be taken for the protection of the industry in case the conflict prolongs.

High level talks in Washington this week

The second meeting of the Joint Council established under the Trade and Investment Framework Agreement (TIFA) will be held in Washington D.C. on Tuesday. This agreement signed during Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe's visit to the White House in July, 2002, provides a framework to discuss bi-lateral and multi-lateral issues relating to Sri Lanka and the US. The Sri Lanka delegation for the talks will be co-chaired by Prof. G. L Peiris, Minister of Enterprise Development, Industrial Policy, Investment Promotion and Constitutional Affairs and Ravi Karunanayake, Minister of Commerce and Consumer Affairs, while Ambassador Jon Hunstman, US Deputy Tade Representative will lead the US delegation. Business leaders representing the apparel, information and communication technology sectors will accompany the delegation.

Islandwide Anti-TB campaign

The TB preventive section of Health Department has organised a function at MRI, Borella in view of the World TB Day which falls on March 24. A month-long propaganda campaign will be launched islandwide and public awareness activities will be carried out in all MOH divisions, said Dr. Ranjan Perera Medical Offices, divisional TB control, Borella.

TB an infectious disease is fast spreading in this country but it is curable. Any person with continuous cough for more than three weeks should consult a doctor and check up whether it is TB said Dr. Ranjan. A TB patient who complete six month long treatment without any interruption would be fully cured he further said.

All patients would be educated on TB preventive measures at the function at MRI, in which all divisional MOH and medical authorities will participate. TB awareness programs are to be conducted in every MOH division islandwide, Dr. Ranjan further said.

Seminar on unity for global peace'

An Islamic religious ceremony and conference on 'The Need of Unity of All Mankind Towards Global Peace' will be held at the BMICH Committee today.

The Chief participant will be Dr. Esa bin Abdullah bin Man'e Al-Hemiari Ex-General Director of Awgaf Islamic Affairs, Dean, Iman Malek Faculty for Islamic law, Dubai and Author of 'Al-Ejah Ala Monkeree Al-Majah' and 'Belogh Al Ma'moul Fee Al Ihthifal Bemawled Al Rasool.'

He is a Ph.D in Islamic Law and Hadith from Quraween University in Morocco and a Ph.D in Islamic faith (Ageeda) from Lahore University in Pakistan. He possesses a Master degree in Islamic Studies from Algere University (Algeria) as well as BA in Islamic law from Um-Al-Qura University of Saudi Arabia.

Lankan beaches in coffee table book

'Beaches Sri Lanka,' a photo-driven coffee table book by veteran photographer Tom Tidball will be released on Friday 28th

March, at the Barefoot Gallery, Colombo.

The book contains photographs of Tom Tidball from his personal collection taken for over a period of 25 years. The pictures depict the stunning seascapes, people on the beach, fishing, underwater, tourist sites cities on the coast and more.

The book also features some spectacular shots of places which have not been photographed very often. These include the areas from the war-torn north and the east such as Jaffna, Kalkudah Bay, Kuchchaveli, Kirinda and Rekawa and Passekudah.
