'Battle of the Babes' ends in drab draw

by S. M. JIFFREY ABDEEN

Kandy Sports Corr.

It turned out to a 'big yawn' at the 45th 'Battle of the Babes' between St. Sylvesters College and Vidyartha College which ended in a drab draw at the Asgiriya Stadium yesterday.

A total of only 7 wickets fell during the entire match which took away any possibility of a decision being reached. This match will go down in the history of the series as one of the dullest battles to be fought out.

The tally in the series remains at 12 wins by St. Sylvesters against 3 by Vidyartha and the balance 30 matches have ended in draws.

From the spectators point of view it was dull cricket no excitement at all. On the first day following a wet outfield, play got under way only at 11.45 a.m. and was continued up to 6.35 p.m. by which time most of the spectators had lift the grounds.

Vidyartha College openers skipper Duminda Wekadapola 101 not out (10 fours) and vice captain Mohammed Nilam 72 (10 fours) put on 118 runs before bring separated at 5.15 p.m. There was no sting in the Sylvestrian attack and they allowed their opponents to pile on the runs. Duminda Wekadapola reached his hundred in the last over of the day. But on the second day when the Sylvestrians batted ball kept to a low trajetory and the batsmen had an uncomfortable time in playing them. Shanaz Najurdeen and Lahiru Manchanayake in trying to force the pace, succeeded in only giving 'dolly' catches while skipper Pradeep Athauda was clean bowled in attempting to play a stroke.

The Sylvestrians in all batted for 100 overs for their 120 runs and 57 maiden overs were sent down during the innings. Spinner Dilan Senanayake had the impressive figures of 18-13-7-2 which will give some indication of the struggle between the bat and the ball. This match is played for the Rev. Don George Trophy and since there was no decision in the match, the Sylvestrians will retain the trophy for another year. They have retained this trophy since it was awarded in 1980.
