Sri Lanka Cricket Academy set up by BCCSL

The Sri Lanka Cricket Board (BCCSL) announced the setting up of a Sri Lanka Cricket Academy according to pre-existing international models. The Academy will initially be located at R. Premadasa Stadium where a dormitory, class rooms and practice pitches are presently available. The Academy will be sponsored by a well-known international brand.

A first batch of around 20 trainees will be selected shortly from those playing in the current schools season by the senior & junior national selectors and this squad is scheduled to commence training from 1st May until 30th November 2003.

Their training will go beyond cricketing skills, to leadership, field strategy, reading of pitches, communications, public speaking, physical fitness, housekeeping, etiquette, funds management and other related areas making such trainees into complete sportsmen of their times.

The Board's batting coach, Owen Mottau will be the Academy's first head coach and the Academy will be administered by the Board's Cricket Operation's Division headed by Director Cricket Operations, Bandula Warnapura through a Board Sub-Committee.

The Board's Coaching Committee chaired by Ranjith Fernando and deputy Kumar Boralessa and other members were instrumental in drafting the plans for a National Cricket Academy along with the Board's Cricket Operation's Division. With his step, we fulfil a void in the local cricketing infra-structure which was the need for a comprehensive institute for developing talented young cricketers leaving the schools system.

The Sri Lankan Cricket Board also wishes to clarify that the programme to supplement schools with cricketing equipment was not stopped as inadvertently reported in certain media releases. Instead the programme was revisited to buy selected equipment from original manufacturers in order to improve cost efficiencies procurement.

Stocks originating from these orders are currently being received and will be released to schools shortly.
