Legislation for computer crime a must -ICC

International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) Sri Lanka plans to activate the standing committees, restructure its activities and play an active role in facilitating Indo Lanka trade activities to face the global challengs and utilise all services available for the ICC membership.

Re elected Chairman ICC Sri Lanka, Mahendra Amarasuriya said that plans are afoot to restructure the organisation to play an active role in policy matters relating to the membership and also provide a more efficient service utilising the services available for the ICC membership.

He said that though our country is moving towards a cashless society there is no legislation in place for crimes using computers while evidence in electronic form too are not acceptable in courts of law. As most segments of the society are IT literate, it is necessary to have the legislation in place.

Amarasuriya said the private sector as the engine of growth is expected to create jobs, but he stressed that the private sector cannot do it unless there are opportunities. Therefore the government should create an enabling environment for the private sector to create employment.

"As far as we are aware the government does not have any concrete plans to move the country forward. There is no proper policy on power generation which makes the cost of power the highest in the world while infrasturture development too is at its infancy.

Therefore first have a plan and execute it."

"Development of meritocracy too is important for the country to move forward. At present some secretaries of ministries are as old as 70 years. They may be intelligent but why not give the younger generation a chance to bloom and experience and infuse fresh thinking."

Parate executions by banks discourage industrialists, but our course of action should be to encourage and not discourage them as they are the future.

ICC was founded in France in the Year 1919 and is a worldwide organisation with national committees in over 130 countries worldwide

The main aim of ICC is to address the concerns of the business community and to convey to the respective governments the business views formulated by the ICC.

ICC Sri Lanka was established in 1983 and is the National committee for Sri Lanka. At present the membership of ICC Sri Lanka stands at 273.
