Software Exports Sets $1.b target by Elmo Leonard Exporters of software from Sri Lanka have set a target of reaching an annual $1 billion in exports, in a decade from now, from the $50 million exports, the nation achieved in 2002. As a first step, 16 leading software developing organisations, which form the Sri Lanka Software Exporters Association (SEA) have formed a `country software pavilion' as part of the IMPEXPRO 2003 International Trade Fair, which opens today, at Sri Lanka Exhibition and Convention Centre, Colombo and ends, April 1. The software country pavilion also include members of the Sri Lanka Association of Software Industry (SLASI). SEA and SLASI showcase proprietary software products spanning a spectrum ranging from traditional solutions in finance, logistics, inventory, insurance, etc to development of Enterprise Resources Planning (ERP), e-business and mobile solutions. SEA chairman, H D Gunawardena told a media conference that the companies booking stalls at the exhibition, are highly skilled with strong international partnership and ISO accreditation. The companies, provide solutions for generic functions of any organisation, to specialised sectors such as stock exchange, telecommunications, NGOs, apparel and local government. Yet another area the participating companies attempt to showcase, is their prowess in customised-offshore development and consultancy services. These include general consultancy services in systems development and niches like sate conversion, networking, and web enabling of existing application, SEA's chairman, marketing committee Manoj Mohinani, said. This initiative is a part of SEA's commitment to aligning the industry to the eSri Lanka initiative of government of Sri Lanka. While computer and IT related services is one of the areas at IMPEXPRO 2003, other products/services include areas as the airline industry, finance and banking, machinery and telecommunications, Computer Systems Ltd's, Pre-Sales Manager, Ananda Herath said. The participating companies are, Affno (Pvt) Ltd, AsiaSoft Ltd, Computer Systems Ltd, Debug Computer Software, EuroCentre DDC (Pvt) Ltd, eSenze Solutions(Pvt) Ltd, EWIS Software (Pvt) Ltd, hSenid Software International (Pvt) Ltd, Informatics International Ltd, ITABS (Pvt) Ltd, John Keells Computer Services (Pvt) Ltd, Kingslake Engineering Systems (Pvt) Ltd, Millennium Information Technologies Ltd, WaveNET (Pvt) Ltd. SEA have done their homework, and delegations from Singapore, Canada and the EU countries, have confirmed their participation. "In India, exports of software exceeds $50 million," Thus, Sri Lanka's target of $1 billion in exports is feasible, the trade told a media conference last week. Sri Lanka's main buyer of software is the United States. Of late, European nations, and in particular, Scandinavian countries have placed orders for software programmed in Sri Lanka, Manoj Mohinani said. |
