A celebration of Sri Lanka's beaches "We dream in pictures. We think and imagine and remember using pictures in our mind. When we want to relax completely someone will paint a word picture: "Imagine yourself lying on a warm tropical beach with a soft breeze rustling the palm branches above, while the sea laps gently on the shore...." Well this isn't a dream. In Sri Lanka it is a real thing. I had no personal frame of reference for exquisite tropical beauty until my first visit to the Island more than 30 years ago. In those days, before troubled times hit the Middle East, overland travellers came down from Europe with their tales of adventure, of routes and rest-houses, and of recently surviving India. But for all, their destination was the same pot of gold at the end of the trail: the prize, the reward - the beach in Sri Lanka. Though my route to island wasn't as perilous, no one has come from farther away than Huskerville in the Great Plains of North America, situated precisely on the opposite side of the globe. I have often wondered if the local fishermen whose families have worked the seashores for scores of generations could imagine our delight in discovering awesome beauty in the place they call "home". Being an avid swimmer and lover of water, I am constantly drawn to the beach where the bait of new discoveries lures my every visit...... where endless stretches of "stable" land abruptly confront the constant fluidity of the sea and sky, creating countless combinations of light, colour and mood-perfect for my little dance with my camera. Sri Lanka is unique in the world. Her strategic location in the Indian Ocean lends itself to a complexed intercourse of natural forces, the sea of course having a huge effect on the ebb and flow of all island life. It is a rich context for ripe, organic beauty worthy of our dreams. I have found no better place on earth than the beach to experience the magnificence or invite the serendipitous, for you can be sure that in Sri Lanka, there is always more than meets the eye". - Tom Tidball, Introduction to "Beaches" ********************* No sex for 40 days and 40 nights Michael Lehmann's " 40 Days and 40 Nights", is a film that revolves round a young man `Matt' who, when discarded by his girl friend, discovers that he is very dependent on sex and decides to abstain from sex for 40 days and 40 nights for Lent. However his friends try to win the 'bet' by making him 'crack' and they make a book on how long his friend will last with his decision. In this film Josh Hartnett plays the role of Matt, a website designer who seems to do inordinately well with ladies. His decision to abstain from sex for Lent, becomes a big challenge to him when he meets Erica (Shannyn Sossamon) who appears to be his 'woman'. Will he say no ...? The film's funniest moments are centred around the sneaky attempts by his colleagues to win the bet by making him 'crack' on their chosen day, as well as Matt's hallucinatory fantasies.... as he starts to crack up.... The film from Universal Pictures is now screened at Liberty, Colombo and Milano, Kegalle. - WIRUMA ********************* Fine Line' - an exhibition of paintings
