The Ceylon Petroleum Corporation allayed fears of fuel shortage and assured that they have adequate stock of crude oil and refined products, to meet the demand for at least another two months. CPC officials said that Sri Lanka will continue to import its regular stocks from Indonesia, Malaysia, Iran and Singapore and that India has also been enlisted with about 30 per cent of the country's diesel requirement to be imported from the Indian Oil Company (IOC) on a trial basis. The official said that the IOC has expressed its capability of meeting the country's entire diesel requirement even at short notice.

Synergy In Theatrum Award-Colombo YMCA to enter field of entertainment

by Karel Roberts Ratnaweera

The Synergy In Theatrum Award for outstanding Achievement in English Theatre will be held on May 09th. Nominees for the Award for the year 2003 are Indu Dharmasena, Jith Pieris, Jerome de Silva, Feroze Kamardeen and Mohammed Adamally.

The Award will become the singlemost sought after title in Sri Lankan English Theatre and will encourage present and future talent to maximise on their potential in English Theatre. Synergy In Theatrum is a collaboration between the Colombo YMCA and MBI (Pvt. Ltd.), The Performing Arts Company. At a recent press conference at the Auditorium of the Colombo 'Y', it's president Dian Abeywardena said that the YMCA is embarking on a 'genuine endeavour' to take talent to the forefront not only to encourage local English theatre, but also seek out the best talent in that sphere and lift standards to international levels, and for the public who need to have 'peace and joy' in their lives in the prevailing peaceful atmosphere.

Mr. Abeywardena said that there was a great deal of scope for education in drama; but our acting talent needs support and the 'Y' was going to step in.

He said that the YMCA had ties with theatre going back several years and mentioned the name of a former president of the institution, H. L. Rent who was a contemporary of Sri Lanka's Lionel Wendt who he said left a legacy of art and culture to the country for which Sri Lankans are heavily indebted. Other names in English theatre associated with the 'Y', he said, were Prof. E. F. C. Ludowyke and E. C. B. Wijesinghe whose presentation of 'He Comes from Jaffna' in 1965 was a great success.

With such a background it had been decided that the 'Y' would go into the field of entertainment. The May 09 gala awards ceremony would also be an introduction to popularising dinner-theatre in the country.A grand banquet and good entertainment will be the features of the evening with covers for 1200 diners.

The Award will continue to be presented every two years from this year on,to an outstanding individual who has dedicated him or herself to the development of English Theatre in Sri Lanka.
