CR and CH is share Le Bond Trophy with 10-all draw by LAL GUNESEKERA Two snap tries by right winger Zulfiqar Halimdeen helped CR & FC to hold the CH & FC to a 10-all draw in the Cup category of the Western Province Rugby Football Union (WPRFU) Under-24 Championship at Longden Place yesterday. This was sponsored by Hameedias for the Le Bond Trophy. Although CR dominated play in the first session, both sides just could not do any scoring. In this session, CR's Roshan Pieris, kicked astray two penalties. Came the second session and CH opened scoring in the fifth minute. Harshana Wijeweera put over a near 40 metre penalty for CH after CR were penalised in a scrum and off their own "throw in". Two minutes later, Halimdeen, missed a 35-metre penalty for CR. Then, CH, increased the lead to 10-0 through a try under the posts by prop Thalagalaaratchi and Wijeweera made certain of the conversion. Halimdeen then put the finishing touches to a fine three-quarter move, but he failed with the conversion in the 31st minute, and two minutes later, booted the ball over and fell on it, for his second try, but Pieris missed the crucial and difficult conversion for CR, who managed to draw. Nizam Jamaldeen refereed. Old Zahirians won the Bowl category beating Air Force by 35 points (5 goals) to 19 (2 goals, 1 try) after leading 21-7 at half time, while Kurunegala RFC won the Plate category beating Sabaragamuwa by 25 points (5 tries) to nil after leading 15-0 at "lemons". Pradeep Fernando and D. Nimal were the referees respectively. Managing Director of Hameedias, Fowzul Hameed, was the chief guest, while Jamshad Sourjah (General Manager of Hameedias) was the guest of honour. |
