Rajans take Lemonade Trophy in last ball win over Ananda by RANJAN ANANDAPPA Dharmaraja College Kandy, recorded a sensational last ball win over Ananda, beating them by one wicket in an absorbing 'Lemonade' trophy limited over school cricket final at the Sinhalese Sports Club grounds yesterday. Dharmaraja won the trophy for the first time. In a match that swung furiously from side to side Ananda opted to bat first after winning the toss and were restricted to 202 in their allotted 50 overs. Dharmaraja in reply were right on course at one stage with 137 for 4. A fine spell of off-spin bowling by Thilina Kumarasinghe (5 for 28) saw Dharmaraja losing 5 wickets for 37 runs in a middle order collapse putting Ananda in sight of a certain win. It was Dharmaraja's Chamara Kapugedera who stood in between Ananda's way as he batted with charm and aggression for his 68. He strode to the wicket when his side was 71 for 3 and batted sensibly for his 68, when finally Kapugedera was out the Kandy school was 174 for 8 still needing 29 runs with two wickets in hand. Dharmaraja lost their number nine batsman Mithipolaarachchi stumped by wicketkeeper Herath to give Kumarasinghe's fifth wicket. The Rajans last pair Asanka Samarakoon and Maduka Rajapakse needed 11 runs off 12 balls and in the last over they needed 7 runs to win, the pair batted unruffled under mounting pressure and needed 2 runs in the last ball. Samarakoon hit one to deep mid off where there should have been only a single but a fielding lapse by the deep mid off fielder enabled the Rajans to go for the second run. |
