Yonex keen to establish Badminton Academy in Colombo by LAL GUNESEKERA The internationally known sports goods manufacturer, Yonex, are keen on the Sri Lanka Badminton Association (SLBA) establish a Badminton Academy in Colombo with a minimum of four to five courts and already two teams from Yonex have been in the island for a market evaluation. The President of the SLBA, Riza Jumar, told the Sunday Observer that Rs. 75 million will be needed for the initial stages and two blocks of land have been earmarked near the Royal College Sports Complex. He said: "We negotiated for one block with the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) and they wanted the concrete plans for favourable consideration. The other block of land belongs to the Land Ministry coming under the purview of Minister Rajitha Senaratne". Jumar also said that the Asian Badminton Confederation (ABC) was the "best bet" in finding a top notch coach for a three to four-year assignment in Sri Lanka. Vernu Gopal, Malaysian coach who was in the country earlier is also helping in this matter. Earlier, Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Johnston Fernando, had requested the Chinese authorities for a top coach to be sent to Sri Lanka. The credentials of this person was sent, but Minister Fernando was not happy and requested Jumar to "scout around" for a suitable coach and that the Ministry will meet all expenses. Meanwhile the annual general meeting of the SLBA will be held today (Sunday) at its headquarters, Maitland Place at 10 a.m. |
