Jayasundaras' make indelible mark in sporting history of Kandy

by A. C. DE SILVA

Seven they say is lucky and it is particularly so when it comes to a family affair. So when the Jayasundaras' of Kandy get together to commemorate the second death anniversary of one of their fold - Parakrama a few days from today - April 1 to be exact, many tales are bound to surface and sport is also likely to be a topic as the Jayasundara clan has been associated with sports at Dharmaraja College and Kandy in particular.

That's seven brothers, but the sporting prowess of the Jayasundaras' does not end there, they are also fortunate to have two sisters - Jayanthi and Swarnathilaka who are sports-minded having represented Mahamaya at netball and also excelling in track and field at school level.

So, the topic those days would surely have been centred on sports with seven brothers and two sisters in the family circle all interested in sports. Coming to the eldest - Parakrama. He was a Stubbs Shield boxer at school and an Intermediate champion in lightweight. Being the eldest, Parakrama set a fine example and he will be remembered by his family and friends alike.

No. 2 is Daya Jayasundera, now Deputy Inspector General of Police who went on to represent Sri Lanka in rugby football and later became a top rugby referee. But, in his schooldays he excelled in cricket, soccer, hockey and also participated in track and field events at Dharmaraja.

The third in line is Ananda - Assistant General Manager of Bank of Ceylon, who was in his hey day considered one of the fastest bowlers in Sri Lanka. He also played soccer, hockey and indulged in track and field. Then comes Upananda of Kandy Municipal Council fame. He was a cricketer of no mean repute, an athlete and a boxer who became the national junior flyweight champion.

Sarath is No. 5 and he is SSP and played hockey for the Kandy District team. Major General Gamini Jayasundera of the Sri Lanka Army had the honour of being Dharmaraja's first rugby football captain. He was also a cricketer and a hockey player and represented the Defence Services at hockey. Senarath also attached to Bank of Ceylon is the last of the brothers and he played rugby football for his school.

Dharmaraja College is fortunate to have the Jayasundara brothers at school and three of them - Ananda, Upananda and Senarath are actively involved in the OBA and hold office.
