Hijacked Turkish airliner takes off for Ankara ATHENS, March 29 (AFP) - Passengers on a Turkish airbus hijacked to Athens overnight took off early on Saturday on a flight to Ankara after the incident was brought to a peaceful end. They left on a Turkish Airlines aircraft which landed in the Greek capital at dawn. The nine crew of the hijacked plane were due to fly home later in the day. Greek police were still questioning the suspected hijacker, a 20-year-old Turkish national, who commandeered the Airbus A-310 shortly after it took off from Istanbul late on Friday, forcing it to divert to the Greek capital from its intended destination of Ankara The plane had 194 passengers on board, including four Turkish parliamentarians and a former minister, some of whom were instrumental in bringing a bloodless end to the hijacking. "Overall, there are no problems with the state of the passengers," director of civil aviation Stavros Constantinidis told Athens radio Flash. Police said the hijacker would appear before a prosecutor on Saturday morning. Turkey had not demanded his extradition by mid-morning, the foreign ministry said, which refused to say how Greece would react to such a request. |
