Thai Prime Minister in SL for Vesak

by Lokubandara Munasinghe and Jayampathy Jayasinghe

The Sri Lanka Tourist Board (CTB) has made elaborate arrangements with private sector participation to illuminate the kandy town during the Vesak commemoration week that will coincide with the historic visit of the Thailand Prime Minister to Kandy.

The Prime Minister of Thailand Takshin Shrinawathra will arrive in the Kandy town after opening the second Ranweta at the Mahamaluwa at Anuradhapura along with Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe. Both Prime Ministers are expected to stay in Kandy town during the Vesak Poya.

A spokesman for the Buddha Sasana Ministry said that this would also be a historic occasion with the founding of the Siyam Nikaya chapters both of Asgiriya and Malwatte Vihara, 250 years ago.

To commemorate Wesak, all embassies abroad have been instructed by the Buddha Sasana Ministry to illuminate embassy buildings with Vesak lanterns and to disseminate information to the public about Vesak. Airlines flying from Sri Lanka will also be issued with short films highlighting the significance of Vesak.

Sri Lanka Tourist Board Chairman Paddy Vithana said that he has instructed all hotels and guest houses owned by the Tourist Board to illuminate and decorate the buildings with lanterns during the Vesak week.

In addition the Tourist Board has organised a Vesak lantern competition in the Kandy town. The winner of the first and the second prize will get Rs. 75,000 and Rs. 50,000 respectively in addition to 2,500 consolation prizes. The application forms for this contest will be made available at the Queens Hotel in Kandy, he said.
