Leading jeweller involved in murder by P. Krishnaswamy A leading jeweller and owner of a well-known chain of jewellery stores in Colombo and Tamil Nadu, now living in South India and involved in the gruesome murder of a 20-year-old Sri Lankan woman was produced before the Joint Magistrate Court in the South Indian city of Madurai on Wednesday. Also produced in Courts was his accomplice, a Sri Lankan student. Police last Monday found Mayurani (20), a Sri Lankan woman from Trincomalee pursuing higher studies (M.Sc. Computer Science) in Ambiga College, murdered in her room in the house of Solaimalai Thevar the 63-year old jeweller, who is also the owner of the college where she was studying. Police found the body in a highly decomposed state two days after the murder, when a complaint was made of a stench emanating from the room of the deceased. Thevar, who owns a chain of jewellery stores in Colombo and Tamil Nadu, has confessed to the police that he had persuaded Balaprasanna, a Sri Lankan student, also studying at Ambiga College, to murder Mayurani, after she discovered him watching her undress and threatened to expose him. Balaprasanna also from Trincomalee and aspiring Medical College admission has confessed to the police of having murdered the girl on the instigation of Thevar, who had promised him a seat in the Medical College. The suspects have been remanded and the case will be taken up next Tuesday. |
