'Silver Screen' award for Anoma Janadari The "Silver Screen" award for the best actress at the 16th Singapore International Film Festival has been awarded to Anoma Janadari, who played the female lead in the film "Flying with One Wing". The award acknowledged "her sensitive portrayal of the struggle faced by an underclass woman with male desires", the festival citation reads. The film, directed by Asoka Handagama and produced by Upul Shantha Sannasgala, won the Special Jury prize after competing with 12 other new Asian films for "its audacious cinematic portrait of a woman caught between the repressive power of a patriarchal society and her own masculine aspirations." It represented the Korean film festival held from April 29 - May 4. Anoma came into limelight by her somewhat unorthodox roles in the tele-dramas "Dunhinda Addara", "Diyaketa Pahana" and "Cynthetic Sihina" and her maiden cinematic lead in her husband Handagama's film "Chanda Kinnari". She also won the Critics' award for the best supporting actress in his film "Me Mage Sandai". "Flying with One Wing" has repesented Sri Lanka in a number of international film festivals, becoming the Best Asian film at the Tokyo International Film Festival. It has also won the Special Jury prize and the viewers' award for the Best Feature Film at Torino International Film Festival, the most revolutionary South Asian film award at Rigan International Film Festival, London, and the Special Jury prize at St. Sebastian Film Festival, Spain. |
