Targetting Sri Lanka

by KAREL ROBERTS RATNAWEERA

Tea and tours have become synonymous, it was revealed at an informal media briefing hosted by the Managing Director and Board of Directors of TARGET Travels (Pvt.) Ltd., a subsidiary of the Ranfer Group.

Associated with Managing Director Nirmal Ranasinghe were Travice Fernando, Director, Ranfer Group, Director, Ranfer Teas (Pvt.) Ltd., a member of the Ranfer Group, Rajiv De Sylva, Nanda Kohana, Director and Chief Executive Officer, Bandula de Silva. MD Nirmal Ranasinghe said that out of Colombo Commercial Teas flowed the idea of forming a private tea-exporting business which in turn fanned out into the exportation of desiccated coconut and the exotic spices of Sri Lanka.

Established in 1985 by Travice Fernando who left Colombo Commercial Company's Teas, with Nirmal Ranasinghe and Rajiv De Sylva.

As tea exporting as well as desiccated coconut and spice exportation were heavily tourist-oriented, the group asked themselves the question why not start a travel company, especially as tea buyers travel extensively. On the drawing board are package tours for 'specialist' tourists such as doctors, environmentalists and others in specific professions.

In introducing TARGET to the trade and the general public, it must be mentioned that international as well as domestic tours will occupy important slots on the agenda.

'Catch the cricket live' - two tours will leave for Dambulla when Sri Lanka plays Pakistan on the 10th of this month and take on the New Zealanders on the 13th. Included in these two tours will be transport in air-conditioned coaches, Colombo - Dambulla - Colombo, with stays at the Dambulla Oya Family Park and Namala Resort where, included on the menu is typical Sri Lanka cuisine.

Senior citizens will enjoy a 5 per cent discount while those very junior citizens of under age five will be free.

For Royal and Trinity Bradby fans - (in June) - who would like to travel on the luxury Hitachi train - with a champagne breakfast to celebrate the occasion - get in touch with experienced travel-trade personality Bandula de Silva, CEO TARGET Travel, on Tel: 686805/6 for details. Vesak tours are also being organised.

Nirmal Ranasinghe said that with Target selling Sri Lanka in such distant and unusual (to the average tourist) as Kazakhstan and its environs with the line discover Sri Lanka and the world together, will open new frontiers for Target Travels.
