Global Capitalism cause of many worker woes - Wickremabahu

Secretary General of the United Federation of Labour (UFL), Dr. Wickremabahu Karunaratne: "The process of global capitalism has so far not brought any benefits to the working class.

They have only reduced our job security, been responsible for the closing down of a large number of national enterprises, caused inflation and destroyed valuable resources and the environment. In addition, problems were caused to female workers affecting their human rights.

"In spite of these conditions, we have been defending the attempt of the Government to offer a federal solution to the national question. We did our best to fight against the militarism proposed by the Anura-Wimal Alliance.

We are terribly concerned about the temporary withdrawal of the LTTE from the peace talks. We press upon the Government to alleviate their fears and concerns and get them back on the negotiatory process." Deputy President of the Joint Plantation Trade Union Centre (JPTUC), O.A.Ramiah:

"Globalisation is an international phenomenon. Plantation workers alone cannot resist all adverse impacts of globalisation.

Unfortunately, the working class and trade union movements in Sri Lanka are divided and, as a result, they could not prevent the privatisation process. There have been both positive and negative impacts as a result of globalisation and privatisation.

The working class in general has lost many rights which they hitherto enjoyed. It is, therefore, imperative for the working class, including the plantation workers, to defend their rights and improve their living conditions.

The trade union movements have maintaianed unity among Sinhala and Tamil workers, despite the two decade long ethnic conflict.

The Government should mobilise the trade union movement and the working class in support of the peace process and to fight against racial elements that attempt to sabotage the peace process," Ramiah said.
