CR starts with a bang beat Kandy Youth 86/6

by LAL GUNESEKERA

CR & FC opened their season in their quest of regaining the Caltex League Rugby Championship with a bang yesterday at Longden Place when they thrashed Kandy Youth SC by 86 points (7 goals, 6 tries, 1 penalty goal) to 6 (2 penalties) after leading 43-3 at half time.

The 'Red shirts' with a far superior back-division and mobile set of forwards ran rings round the Kandy Youth defence which could never stand up to CR's ferocious play. CR's two wingers Halimdeen and Mushtaq together with Centre Kuluaratchi were outstanding with full-back Asanga Rodrigo too showing his skills as an attacking player. Among the forwards, skipper Shumly Nawaz and Savantha de Saram were the pick, while scrum-half Hameed too had an outstanding game.

CR scored six tries in the first session with Asanga Rodrigo opening the flood gates. Then came tries by No. 8 Savantha de Saram, right winger Halimdeen on two occasions, left winger Mushtaq and skipper Nawaz.

The second half was equally impressive. Several replacements came in for CR who opened scoring through Savantha de Saram in the 10th minute, followed by scrum-half Hameed, skipper Nawaz, left winger Nishantha Kumara, centre Kaluaratchi, Asanga Rodrigo and replacement right winger Wegodapola. Halimdeen made certain of four conversions, while Roshan Pieris, who came in as a centre in the second session converting three.
