Coconut arrack to get a boost at culinary exhibition

by LAKMAL WELABADA

Culinary Art 2003, organised by the Chefs Guild of Sri Lanka, will be held at the BMICH New Convention and Exhibition Hall from July 4 to 6.

Twenty trophies including the Best Hotel Team and Most Outstanding Chef will be awarded to competitors selected from 18 to 20 categories.

Whether young or old, up-coming or experts, everyone in the culinary field will get an opportunity to try out their talents and skills and gain recognition at this exhibition and competition. Foreign chefs from the World Association of Cooks Societies and local experts will judge the competition.

About 1,200 competitors from nearly 100 hotels and catering establishments in Sri Lanka will take part in this year's Culinary Art competition and exhibition. Over 800 chefs will share their experiences and creative talents in the 'art of cooking'. And for the first time, the event will include eight to 10 sessions of live demonstrations in various categories.

Introducing and promoting coconut arrack as a cocktail by the name 'Sri Lankan Sunrise' will be the highlight at the event. The organisers hope that the promotion will open international doors for the local coconut arrack and draw foreign currency to the country.

"Though coconut arrack is the only accepted indigenous liquor, it has not got the proper rank among locals who tend to go for the foreign brands all the time. After introducing it as a cocktail at the Culinary Art 2003, we hope coconut arrack will attract more demand than foreign brands. Lankan expatriates could proudly serve it to their guests as a production of their own country," said Gerad Mendis, President of the Chefs Guild.

Cargills will be the main sponsor of this year's event while Keells Food Products, Nestle Lanka, New Zealand Milk, East West Foods, Kalutota Food, Stassen Foods, Free Lanka Trading, Elle and Vire (France), Luv-A-Duck (Australia), Lion Ceylon Brewery, International Distillers and Delmege Distributors will be the co-sponsors.

Colombo Hilton, Colombo Plaza, Galadari, Trans Asia and Mount Lavinia Hotel will be the hotel sponsors. ABC Radio Network will be the official radio broadcaster. About 35 companies (including the sponsors) will have trade stalls at the exhibition.
