Suntel says Ayubowan to new MD

by Pelham Juriansz

Suntel broke new ground recently when it appointed its first female Managing Director to the Colombo office. Former Managing Director, Hugo Cederschiold from Sweden, handed over the reins to the new MD, Lillemor Larsson, also from Sweden.

Cederschiold, the longest serving CEO in Colombo, said he is handing over the company to a capable person, who counts many years in the telecommunications industry with the Telia Group of Sweden. Being an engineer by profession, Larsson is capable of vastly improving the telecommunications industry in the country, he said.

Cederschiold came to Sri Lanka in 1999, three years after the company had started. Dinesh Ambani, Director, Suntel said he came at a very critical juncture as the company needed astute leadership at the time, and had to compete and grow while achieving reasonable returns on its heavy investments in Sri Lanka.

At the time the company had set itself some rigorous standards such as delivery of connections within seven days: guaranteeing 100 per cent quality to the customer; establishing the concept of Corporate Account Management; and a 24-hour Customer Care Hotline, Cederschiold stepped in and set things right, steering the ship in the right direction. Suntel is now an ISO 9002-certified company.

The feather in the company's cap was being rated Best Telecom Service Provider in the country by the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission this year. Suntel recorded a net profit of Rs 200 million for the year ending December 31, 2002, an eightfold improvement over the previous year.

Larsson plans to further expand into strategic locations throughout the island. Suntel is a joint venture between Telia AB of Sweden, Metropolitan Group, Townsend Limited of Hong Kong, National Development Bank and International Finance Corporation (a member of the World Bank).
