3M and Laugfs innovate car care

by Pelham Juriansz

Restoring your car and maintaining your vehicle with its original shine is all that it is about.

Car care at its highest and the maintenance of your vehicle at its peak.

The 3M company which is well renowned for its products worldwide, has come up with an innovative car-detailing scheme whereby one can over the period of one year sign a contract with 3M and Laugfs for the total maintenance of your vehicle at one of the three detailing outlets in the country.

13th of June is normally associated with bad luck and especially if it is a Friday, but this time around it seemed good for 3M when they made the boldest move yet, in car-care by launching the first of many car Detailing centers at Rajagiriya. The other two centres are at Kandy and Wattala.

Both 3M and Laugfs welcomed the partnership and hoped that this joint venture would be the start of further detailing centres being opened out in the future to cater to the needs of the public.

At the moment only those in Rajagiriya, Kandy and Wattala areas have been benefited.

Kishore Rao, Managing Director of 3M Lanka said that Sri Lanka was blessed with a very discerning segment of customers who valued their cars, and that 3M range of car detailing and maintenance products offered great value to these customers in keeping their cars in top condition.

The Chairman of Laugfs, W.K.H. Wegapitiya reiterated these sentiments, and further said that, this is creating a new chapter for the automotive after market industry with the backing of expertise in our group.

According to Krishna Kumar, Assistant Technical Manager of 3M in the Asia Pacific region, there are about 160 detailing centres in India and it is envisaged that about 20 could be set up in the future in Sri Lanka to cater to the needs of the customers here. The 3M outlets are now located at 404/1, New Negombo Road, Wattala, 468, William Gopallawa Mawatha, Kandy and at 1070, Kotte Road, Welikada, Rajagiriya.

Also available are "Do-it-yourself Car Care", products in easy to use containers, for interior enhancement, exterior beautification, engine rejuvenation and exclusive under-chassis and internal panel protection.

Further, car owners will be educated when to wax the car, why car wash soap had to be used, what cleaners, degreasers and dressings are and when a Fuel system cleaning is required.

In other words total car care will be provided, according to the MD of 3M Lanka, Rao.

Confifi introduces silverstone motor sports tyres

Confifi Engineering (Pvt) Ltd., a subsidiary of the Confifi Group has recently started importing specialised tyres for motor sports purposes from the famous Silverstone Tyre Company in Malaysia.

Silverstone is one of Malaysia's largest tyre manufacturing companies, which entered the competition tyre development market in the early 90's developing a range of tyres, which are specially suited to the gruelling hot and humid climate prevailing in Asia.

Since then the range has developed and Silverstone competition tyres are now popularly used all over the world in professional motor sports events including the Asian Rally Championship, the British Rally Championship and countries from Australia, New Zealand, all over Asia, Japan, South America, North America and Europe. The tyres that Confifi Engineering are importing are specialised for rallying on all types of different surfaces including gravel, tarmac as well as track use including semi and full slicks.

Stefan Furkhan, Managing Director of Confifi Group, himself a motor sports enthusiast and a rally competitor commented that he and several motor sports competitors in Sri Lanka experienced difficulties in obtaining their requirements of these specialised tyres in the local market, and this motivated Confifi Engineering to source a suitable quality tyre that would suit Sri Lankan conditions and import and distribute the same for the motor sports fraternity in Sri Lanka.

The first consignment of Silverstone competition tyres has just been imported in time for the upcoming motor sports events - SLARDAR 2003 Rally, Southern Rally, Confifi Silverstone Rally and the Gajaba Super Cross which are all due to be run during end June, July and August. Stefan Furkhan commented that the Silverstone tyres are used in similar conditions in gravel stages in coconut, rubber and oil palm estates in Malaysia and also tarmac and track events where the temperature, humidity and other conditions are similar to what is experienced in Sri Lanka.

This makes it an ideal choice for Sri Lankan competitors. Silverstone tyres are considered of an extremely high standard and quality which are made to European specifications and comparable to the best rally and competition tyres that come out of Europe. After testing the tyres both here and in Malaysia, he was convinced to import them to be made available to the Sri Lankan motor sports fraternity.

Ajith de Alwis of Confifi Engineering was quoted as saying that stocks of Silverstone Rally tyres will be available for the upcoming events - SLARDAR Rally 2003, Southern Rally, Confifi Silverstone Rally 2003 and the Gajaba Super Cross, all due to be run between now and August. Apart from Rally tyres, Silverstone also provides a range of circuit and track tyres in semi and full slick specification suitable for tarmac and circuit use.

The Confifi Group as a part of its promotion of Silverstone competition tyres is sponsoring for the first time a rally titled Confifi Silverstone Rally 2003 in collaboration with the Ceylon Motor Sports Club and the Kandy Motor Sports Club on the 26th and 27th of July, 2003. The rally will commence at the Parliament Grounds and end up at the Club Palm Garden Hotel in Beruwala.
