Soul ballads her fav music

A singer with a penchant for ballads Yasmin de Silva hails from a family of musicians. Her father was the well known pianist and accordionist Placidus Fonseka and her mother a recognised singer in church. Their talents were inherited by all six siblings.

Yasmin has no regrets being a singer. She started off in the 90's with Heathrow managed by Upali Edirisinghe, then switched to the dance band Pearl led by Jayanta de Silva before deciding to work the lobby scene with Diliup Gabadamudalige. After six and a half years Yasmin moved into being the lead singer for the popular dance band Sohan & the X'periments.

Name: Yasmin Mary de Silva

Birthday: June 6. Celebrated the occasion at the Colombo Plaza when I was singing for the Peterite Dance with the X'periments! Had an enjoyable evening. Status: Married and I have two children - Dirk and Gayan.

Fav colour: Actually there are two colours which I consider favourites - Mauve and grey.

Trendy outfits: Yes I do like trendy outfits. I generally wear pant-suits. I like the dresses in vogue. But I design my own clothes. Although I'm somewhat influenced by the trends I always am modest in my dress.

Hair do's: At the moment I have straight hair. Earlier I had very curly hair and after all these years I decided to have a change in style and so I straightened my hair recently. Fav music: Soul and jazz ballads. Even in my early years when I was singing for the lobby scene I concentrated on the ballads. As for pop only songs that suit my voice. Fav song of the 80's and 90's: Gloria Gaynor's hit song "I Will Survive" from the 80's. As for the 90's it's Celine Dion's 'My Heart Will Go On.'

Are you superstitious: No. I don't believe in superstitions. I am a Catholic by religion and these things don't bother me.

What's your pet hate: If it's insects - then I can't bear the sight of a cockroach. If it's people then I hate people who gossip. In the music world I feel that it is good to be open in what one has to say. It is essential to treat all equally.

When you are not singing what keeps you awake at night: When I'm not singing of a night it is really hard to drop off to sleep early, so I watch movies until I feel I should turn in for the night. I get up early the next morning, I'm used to that - that's a routine for me as I have to pack my boys off to school.

Where would you like to be most now: I haven't travelled and from the stories I've heard about other countries I'd like to be in Sri Lanka now and forever.

What other profession would you like to be in: Designing - especially interior decor.

That's one of my areas of artistic expression. I do flower arrangements for weddings and special occasions.

What's your meaning of life: Life is precious - to use the cliche, and should not be wasted away. Life to me means that I should be myself and not try to be somebody else. It won't ring true. So others too should be themselves and not try to be somebody else.

Your fav. food? Do you cook? Spicy food. I enjoy stringhoppers any time of the day. With spicy curries, string hoppers make my day! As for cooking - I cook daily - a little too much! I have to.

Do you diet or do you belong to the work out syndrome: I work out - at home. No going to "power gyms". I do diet. I cut out a lot of starch and am more of a vegetarian. I don't eat beef at all because I'm allergic to it.

Songs you don't like to sing: Songs by Madonna, the Spice Girls and Britney Spears. I think their songs have no depth.

Which product would you like to most endorse: Chunky silver jewellery. If you could change anything about yourself what would it be: Sometimes I have a bad temper which hits me hard. I'd like to change that, and be a cool tempered person. As it is, the bad temper does not last for long because when it happens I turn to reading the Bible and I'm quite happy again.

Are you a dreamer by nature: Yes, yes! I have visions of myself on a global stage, singing to an appreciative audience... I guess it's only a dream!!

What would you do if you ruled the world: I won't allow for war and devastation. I'd see that everyone enjoys a peaceful and friendly life. No one wants to experience turmoil.

Any future music plans: I will continue with my singing. I have composed a peace song and I want to include the song on a CD with some of my original compositions.
