Buddhist monks on peace pilgrimage to Nagadeepa Mahanayaka Thera to visit Jaffna by E. Weerapperuma and our Batticaloa Corr. In a path-breaking initiative, the Most Venerable Udugama Buddharakhitha Thera, Mahanayaka of the Asgiriya Chapter, visits Jaffna later this week, in the first visit to the Peninsula by a Mahayanaka Thera in thirty years. The Venerable Mahanayaka Thera is expected to address a public meeting in Jaffna in which he will make an appeal for the resumption of the peace talks. Meanwhile, in a separate initiative, some 2,500 Buddhist pilgrims including monks and a large group of lay people will travel the A9 highway to Jaffna on a Peace Pilgrimage to Nagadeepa to hold a special prayer ceremony for peace at the centuries-old sacred island shrine. The Mahanayaka Thera of the Asgiriya Chapter will participate in a delegation of clergy of various religions and lay activists which will be on a two-day peace mission to the North organised by the multi-religious World Solidarity Forum for Sri Lanka. While the peace delegation arrives in Jaffna on Saturday, June 28th, the Mahanayaka Thera travels on Sunday to deliver the anusasana at a public meeting at the prestigious Veerasingham Hall. Organisers told the Sunday Observer that a very large public attendance was expected for the historic visit by the Mahayanaka Thera and that, if necessary, the venue for the public meeting may be shifted to a another location that could accommodate a large crowd. The Mahanayaka Thera is expected to speak in Sinhala with a Tamil translation. Organisers are also negotiating with the Government for the transport of the prelate and his retinue by air to Jaffna. On Saturday, the World Solidarity Forum conducts a workshop on the theme 'Coming to a Common Mind and Raising a Common Voice', which will be attended by the clergy various religions visiting from the South and clergy of Jaffna, including senior Hindu , Moslem and Christian clergy including Roman Catholic Bishop of Jaffna, the Rt. Rev. Thomas Saundranayagam. |
