Journeying together "Creativity brings joy to many who experience the aesthetic beauty of what an artist brings forth and giving this happiness, an artist in turn also receives happiness and contentment. This then, makes one very thankful for the opportunity to bring out inner beauty and achieve a sense of self-actualisation". This thought expressed by Shyamala Pinto-Jayawardena, echoes what she is trying to develop in the minds of the young children who are journeying with her at the Shyamala School of Art. Located in Thalawathugoda, Shyamala's School of Art, celebrated one year of achievements last month. Teaching students from the age of five to 18, Shyamala has about 30 young artists under her wing. Recently she also started teaching adults in her school. Children however remain her favourites. The children use a wide range of materials to express their ideas and feelings. Learning skills and developing talent is blended in with learning to interact with other children as well as learning to appreciate and give constructive criticism, which older folk at times find hard to accept! Shyamala is a mother of two and has devoted her entire post graduate career to Art. Having received her Collegiate Education at Methodist College and her Graduate Education from the University of Kelaniya, she has over 20 years experience in teaching Art and Design. Looking back at one year of successful growth, Shyamala attributed her achievements to prayer, hard work and intense personal commitment. |
